During the European winter this small fascinating forest park attracts hosts of migrant birds, adding to the many native species found here. You will almost certainly also see monkeys, lizards, crocodiles, antelopes and hyenas.

Boat trip

Early morning ‘Champagne Breakfast' river trips offer the best opportunity for sightings of the rarer bird visitors, hippos and other wildlife. There are several more wildlife parks, including a centre for rescued chimpanzees. More adventurous travellers can cross the river in a beautiful traditional African boat, the pirogue.

A very popular full-day excursion is to take a luxury motorboat across the River Gambia to the north shore and the village of Juffre, home of Alex Haley's ancestor, Kunta Kinte, hero of the best selling based-on-truth novel “Roots”. You can meet Kunta Kinte's descendants, and on the return journey take a swim in the river alongside the historic James Island, and maybe see some dolphins.

To keep costs as low as possible, excursions are charged as optional extras.
